It's awfully difficult to keep a lid on the excitement on the 23rd of December with a room full of six year olds! Add a school singalong and mysterious elves that keep turning up everywhere (thanks for that to our admin!) and let's just say it was quite a day! Still, we did our literacy centres in the morning and used candy to do some adding and subtracting in the afternoon. Mrs. James had baked some yummy cookies for us, and we used the candy to decorate them! Thanks Mrs. James!

Guided reading and literacy centres are very popular activities in our room. As the year goes on, independence and skill development are progressing. In the small, teacher directed reading groups we are practising many strategies to read and instruction is geared to the needs of the individual readers whatever their level of competency. In January, I will be doing a diagnostic assessment called the DRA to see where exactly everyone is on the continuum in preparation for the report card. Sedef is a very caring little girl. She's helpful, says kind things, takes care of her own belongings and those of others, and is empathetic when her friends are hurt or sad and happy for them when things go well! Congratulations Sedef!
We do many whole group activities during the day where new concepts are introduced, explored and practised, but there comes the time where the kiddos have to demonstrate what they can do on their own. That's when the teacher gets the time to work with small groups and circulate to give individual help where needed. Click on the pictures to enlarge them and read the captions.
This beautiful artwork is inspired by a book we read called Sky Sisters, the story of two young sisters who venture out together to witness the Northern Lights in Canada's north. It's a lovely book with visually stunning illustrations. After we enjoyed the story, we discussed how the illustrator created perspective by making objects that are closer larger and objects that are further away smaller. In our artwork, we used the different sized trees and the footsteps in the snow to create perspective! This work took several days as we broke it down into steps, each of which had to dry before we went on to the next. The snow texture is created by mixing white glue and shaving cream in equal parts! We achieved the shimmer by shaking silver glitter into it while it was still wet. The black outline is white glue mixed with black acrylic paint. We used q-tips and white paint to create the gently falling snow. Enjoy! |
