The hundredth day of 2015 arrived today and we celebrated with many activities, but the absolute favourite was Zero the Hero's visit at the end of the day! Thanks to everyone who counted out 100 treats with their child to help make our party complete - we loved counting with our friends and then eating all of the goodies! Zero the Hero has now returned to resume her duties because without the number zero, nothing will work properly. We do love you Zero the Hero!

As we approach the number 100 in our counting, we are using our number sense to try out some new concepts. Right now we're talking about estimation. As my friend Jack explained very well this morning, "An estimate is a good guess, not a silly guess. You have to guess a number, it doesn't have to be an exact number but it has to be close". (YAY!) We are learning that you need to estimate when there are too many things to count quickly, when you can't see all of the things, when the things are moving, and when you're trying to plan ahead (about how many more of these will I need?). We read one of the online math books today which you can revisit with your child at home (choose the 'Books about Math' button on the 'Links for Fun and Learning' page and find the book titled 'Can You Guess What Estimation Is?'). We will be doing a lot of estimating in different contexts here at school. Today, we are estimating how many coloured cubes are in the jar. The children are using the number chart and abacus for reference. At the end of the day, we will look at all of the estimates, discuss strategies used, and decide which estimates are careful guesses. Activities like this are easy to replicate at home!
