I always say that 'a grateful heart is a happy heart' and this little girl exemplifies just that. This month's character trait was GRATITUDE and I was very pleased to give the award to Camille. Congratulations!
We did this artwork a while back, when we were talking a lot about perseverance. This process took several steps, first we had to make a very colourful base layer using crayons then we painted over it with black paint mixed with dishwashing liquid. That had to dry very well, then we used craft sticks to scratch out our designs. It took a lot of hard work!
Our first ever attempt at rehearsing scripts for plays! We practised for several days, then presented in front of our reading/math buddies. We're not at the props, costumes or memorized lines stage, but the aim was to read our lines 'as if we were talking' (no 'robot talk') and add some appropriate expression. The kids really enjoyed it, and it was a great incentive for a lot of them to read and re-read their lines. Reading something multiple times builds fluency and comprehension! As promised in an earlier post, here is our heart symmetry artwork! “Spatial thinking is integral to everyday life. People, natural objects, human-made objects, and human-made structures exist somewhere in space, and the interactions of people and things must be understood in terms of locations, distances, directions, shapes, and patterns.”
(National Research Council, 2006, p. 5) Spatial reasoning is a very important mathematical skill. Thinking in three dimensions, and picturing how an object might look if flipped, rotated, or slid are things we've been working on. We talked a lot about lines of symmetry today. We looked at the upper case letters of the alphabet - some (like A), have one line of symmetry, some (like H) have two, while others (like G) have none. We looked at pictures of things in nature and used a mirror to find the line of symmetry and discovered why it's called a 'mirror image' when you flip or fold on the line. In the picture below, we used tape on the carpet as our line of symmetry and then used paper shapes to create a mirror image.
I take a lot of pictures, but I just can't compare to Ms. Sanford who has such an artistic eye for framing a shot. Aren't these precious? |
