A former McWilliam student stopped by today to share her time and talents! We had a fun tap dancing demonstration and lesson - please check out the photo gallery on the kindergarten site to view more pictures. The kids did a great job and quickly learned a little dance which included FIVE dance moves. I think that the favourite was the "boogie woogie"!

If only we could wear our jammies every day! It sure was fun, not to mention adorable as well! Visit the site's photo gallery to see many more fun pictures. We've been exploring geometry all month, and have moved from 2D shapes to 3D solids this week. Da'Mya drew some of the shapes and solids today and I was so impressed! Look at that hexagon! The cone and cylinder look very 3D. I hope that you can see them as she squeezed them in and they're a little small. We've been decorating for Chinese New Year. Here are some of our lanterns strung along the windows. Your child can probably wish you Happy New Year in Chinese - it's "Gung Hay Fat Choy" (at least in one dialect, there are many different ones). Ask your little one to sing you the New Year song! You can also see some of our shaving cream and glue "puffy paint" snowmen. Everyone did a great job, it's a shame they don't really survive backpacks very well because the "paint" falls off. We'll leave them up for a while longer. You can also see part of our Word Quilt, which runs along the wall close to the ceiling practically all the way around the room. Originally thought up by Iris, this idea took off and has just turned into an incredible class project. You can see it up a little closer in the pictures below. We are preparing to launch this program again. Very soon your child will be bringing home a math kit. This kit is intended to be a fun and interactive way for you to work with your child at home. Last year, I sent them home with the instructions that they could be kept for as long as you were still enjoying them and would be replaced with another kit when returned, but this did not work out as I hoped. Some children only took home a grand total of 2 or 3 kits the whole term. Other families sent back the kit the very next day. The idea behind these kits is that you and your child take the time to really explore all of the possibilities. Many of the kits have suggested extension activities. Children this age benefit from doing an activity several times, and the books can be enjoyed over and over again. Some kits came back with the comment that the child had difficulty with it - well, let's keep at it and practice so that we can fix that problem! So. . . in an effort to better utilize the kits this year, we are sending them home for a period of one week. The kit will arrive at your home with an expected date of return. The books are lovely and the activities are fun! We are excited about launching the program again and sincerely hope that you enjoy spending time with your child as you explore the kits together!
Here's a really cool activity that Mrs. Nilo introduced to the kids this week - flubber! It's made with a mixture of white glue, food colouring, water and a little bit of Borax. Flubber is really an amazing substance. You can mold it like playdough, roll it, and even bounce it (although we didn't point that out to the kids and none of them have discovered it - yet!) When you pull it apart, it goes back together again as if nothing happened, but what's really cool is that you can use a straw to blow air into it and it will expand like a balloon! Well it's been a very unusual start to the year, that's for sure! I can't believe the amount of snow in our courtyard. Even if the temperatures hadn't been so dangerously low, the kids couldn't have gone out to play because they're not tall enough and we would have lost them! I guess it's going to take a few more days to really get back into the swing of things, stay tuned for more pictures coming soon.
