Well, the pay really stinks if you're a volunteer, but the satisfaction of knowing you're making a great contribution to our school community is certainly priceless! Here is a regular volunteer in our classroom, Mr. Sam Charafeddine, whose own two children passed through our Kindergarten program a few years ago. There are lots of things volunteers can do to enhance our program. In the picture below, Mr. Charafeddine is working on identifying initial (or beginning) sounds with individual students. He's also good at cutting out things, preparing materials, filing and. . . playing! Mr. C. is one of several volunteers and we're so grateful. If you can spare some time, please let us know! We'd love to have you here with us!

Thank goodness the weather cooperated and the rain held off so that we could do our Terry Fox Run today. The children were so "pumped" for the event and they really, really wanted to help Terry. Thanks to everyone who donated a toonie, and some sent even more. Unfortunately, cancer is a disease that touches everyone at some time, be it a family member, friend, colleague, neighbour or yourself. Cancer research has made great strides over the years and it's a fight that we all can contribute to! I lost my most beloved sister in February of 2012 to this disease. Here, as always, I remember her and take up the fight for her - Lesha Tompkins - thought of with love every day. My little friend Iris gave me a nice surprise! When I drew a picture of her and wrote "Iris by Mrs. C." she reciprocated! I was impressed by her ability to 'turn the message around' correctly, replacing it with "Mrs. C. by Iris". Learning numbers is fun when Mrs. Nilo makes a great hopscotch game for the kiddos! Always a difficult day anyway, the first Monday back can be really rough for some of the little ones. It's hard to readjust after two days at home! We had a lot of tears this morning, but don't worry everyone settled down and had a good day. It's always a good idea to keep kids on schedule for bedtime and morning time - even on the weekend - because it makes the return to school so much easier for them.
What a wonderful first day of school! Of course we experienced the usual glitches here and there, a few of the kiddos were having some separation anxiety, and others were having a little bit of trouble adjusting to all of the rules! It's all just a part of Kindergarten and we'll soon have it sorted out! Mrs. Nilo was even brave enough to make playdough with the class this afternoon, and they LOVED IT! Thanks so much for your patience and understanding as we get the year off to a good start! Be sure to check the picture gallery on the site, as I've put up a lot of pictures from our first day. See you tomorrow! Don't tell me "Don't touch" - that's how I learn! Only one week to go until classes begin! I'm enjoying meeting the families of my new JK students and am looking forward to welcoming all of the students to Kindergarten!
