2D shapes are flat, but 3D shapes are solid! We are learning to describe the attributes of these shapes and look for them in everyday objects that we see around us. A glass is a cylinder, a basketball is a sphere! We have also been working on spatial reasoning and ways to describe where something is in space: in, on, under, to the right, to the left. We love a couple of songs we found on Youtube to practice 'left' and 'right'! In the pictures below, we are examining the different attributes of 3D solids and sorting them accordingly (on this particular day we were sorting them by the shape of their bases). Elenthi and Mrs. C. are playing a fun game where Mrs. C. must tell Elenthi where to put each solid on her tray. If Mrs. C. describes the location correctly and Elenthi follows the directions, the structures on both of their trays will be identical. Looks like Elenthi was doing a good job!
Friday February 10th is the special day – we’ll have been in school for 100 days! As part of our celebration, we need to bring in TWO things:
The kiddos love the different balanced literacy centres! I'm pleased to see their independence and confidence growing right along with their reading and writing skills!
Learning about shapes is best done in a 'hands on' fashion - with games, geoboards and puzzles! Want to learn about the shape's attributes? Make it on a geoboard! Want to reinforce shape names? Play a fun matching dice game! Want to learn about sliding, turning and flipping shapes? Puzzles are perfect!
The kiddos really loved 'bending the rules' and you can see that wearing pyjamas and bringing a 'stuffy' were definite favourites. Even though it was a special day, we still accomplished a lot in our learning. Our balanced literacy program ran in the morning, and in the afternoon we had a three part math lesson. We first activated our knowledge about the attributes of 2D shapes, then the students worked in pairs to solve a problem and document their thinking, and finally the pictures in the gallery below show the students presenting and explaining their solutions. This was the problem: each group was given a number and then had to find two shapes whose sides or angles equaled that number when added together. They displayed lots of different ways to show their thinking - pictures, words, numbers, tallies, ten frames and number lines too!
Well our first day of school in 2017 went very smoothly - all the little faces looked pretty happy to be seeing their friends and teachers again! Day two was a little bumpy what with the crazy weather and indoor recesses, but still very productive. We were happy to get back together with our reading/math buddies and play some math games in the library!
